access

Our aim is to create an inclusive and welcoming environment in which young people can thrive.

If you think your child or young person may benefit from participating in our activities but would have specific access requirements to allow them to do so, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We operate a child/young person-centred approach which means that there are no ‘standard’ accommodations – we just try to do what we can for each child, if it is possible and with the resources that we have available.

Please note, there are limitations to the support we can offer and have to work within the resources we have but we will do our best to support any young person who wishes to attend.

Thinking about taking part in our activities?
Here Are some things to consider:

  • Our classes are varying lengths depending on age and stage. Check the length of class for your child/young persons age group to see if they would be comfortable participating for that length of time.
  • Except from exceptional circumstances, we do not allow parents to sit in on  workshops so young people should be comfortable being away from parent/carer for the duration of the class. We have seated areas in all our buildings should you wish to wait outside the class and one of our tutors would notify you if there were any issues. There are opportunities throughout the year where parents/carers can visit workshops and watch short sharings or performances.
  • Classes are creative and fun environments, encouraging young people to be creative and find their voices, as such at times they can be noisy at times!
  • Young people will sometimes work on their own or in small or large groups.

Examples of accommodations that can be made in sessions:

Before you attend a session

  • We know that starting a new class or event in a new space with a tutor you don’t know can be overwhelming for some young people so we can offer to meet parent/carers and young person prior to starting to arrange a tour of the space, explain what happens in a group and meet the tutor.
  • We can send you a pack which includes photos of our spaces and tells you what to expect when you arrive.
  • We can meet with parent/carer and/or young people to discuss individual needs and create an access requirements profile.
  •

During sessions or rehearsals

  • While we always encourage young people to join in with activities as much as they can we recognise that some young people might benefit from a time out space. We can create time out areas in our workshops spaces where a young person can take time away from the main activity should they need a break. In time out areas we can provide colouring sheets or fidget toys or other resources specific to the young person.
  • We know some young people can find the room noisey and we always have access to noise reducing headphones in our spaces.
  • Sometimes we work with scripts or other forms of text. We can adapt any resources to suit individual needs, printing material in specific fonts, different colours of paper or providing coloured overlays.
  • We would always encourage you to make staff aware of individual needs, so that where possible we can tailor or adapt exercises to these needs.

Our Specialist programme:

In addition to our youth theatre classes we also offer Glow; our class specifically designed for young people with additional support needs who might find it challenging to work in a mainstream environment.

In Glow you will find:

  • Small class sizes and high staff to participant ratio
  • Classes specifically designed for the interests and needs of participants.
  • Sensory focused activities
  • Parents/carers can join in should they wish or if there young person needs one to one support.

For more information about Glow or if you want to discuss the individual needs of a participant then please get in touch.
